As a part of its latest marketing campaign, fast food restaurant chain Kentucky Fried Chicken, more popular as KFC, took a shot at the most worrying problem its customers seem to have — texting with greasy fingers while munching through a bucketload of their world famous fried chicken, all without messing up their smartphone screens.
So they replaced the meal tray liners with super-thin, rechargeable wireless paper keyboards, called the "KFC Tray Typers", with every order during the opening week of new KFC restaurants in Germany.
The idea was that the customers would connect their smartphones to the smart paper trays (via Bluetooth) before getting their hands dirty, and then be able to text or send out status updates using the grease-absorbing smart paper inserts while having their meal, without ever having to touch their smartphone.
The result? KFC says, "[...] our fans loved it. Geolocated social media discussions skyrocketed and every single one of the smart paper trays was taken home."
According to The Verge, CSR, a UK-based electronics company showed off similar technology back in 2013.
